Schaumburg, IL- July 25th, 2000 marked the opening of the most successful National Fire, Arson and Explosion Investigation Training Program in recent history. With a combined enrollment of 99 students for the Main Session and the pre-program events, students spent several days increasing their knowledge and skills, networking and enjoying the company of other fire investigation professionals.
Attendees ranged, once again from fire fighters, to professional engineers, attorneys, police detectives and private fire investigation professionals. Groups from Travelers Insurance, the Chicago Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office were in attendance.
The NAFI Sponsored cocktail reception Tuesday evening, allowed the students a chance to unwind after the first day of classes and network with fellow students and instructors.
"This interaction allows the students and instructors to become more comfortable with one another and opens up more useful dialog in the classroom. I feel that it is important for investigators to have time to get to know others in the business. It helps strengthen the knowledge base for each individual and allows them to cultivate important peer resources. The fire investigation community is a very small. It pays to get to know one another," states John Kennedy, CFEI, NAFI President. "What makes our programs successful year after year is the interaction between the students and instructors. If there is a subject the students want to talk about, we talk about it. We also have lots of opportunities for one on one discussions between students and the NAFI Board members and Instructors."
The NAFI General Membership Meeting was attended by the Board of Directors and a number of interested members. The meeting minutes are printed in the enclosed supplement. The Board and General membership also adopted a resolution awarding NAFI board Member Kenneth Schaub, CFEI with the Meritorious Service Award. "Ken has served as an instructor for the Certified Fire Investigation Instructor Course and has tirelessly volunteered his time and energies at NAFI seminars over the last fifteen years. His service, dedication, and friendship are commendable," Ron Hopkins, CFEI, Chairman, National Certification Board.
A record number of 58 students sat for the Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator Exam. The average score, for students taking exam at the training program, topped that of mail exams by over ten points, including several near perfect exams
